Pedal it Pink Breast Cancer Charity Bike Ride - Sun 28th March 2010

Come on girls! Let's get together and put the brakes on breast cancer. On-line registration has now closed, but it is not too late to register on the day.

This year Breast Cancer Campaign's women-only cycle ride, Pedal it Pink is being held in River Lee Country Park in Waltham Abbey.  On Sunday 28 March, Lee Valley Regional Park will host the event, which hopes to attract hundreds of ladies from across the South East region.

Alex Adames from Harpenden in Hertfordshire is supporting Lee Valley's Pedal it Pink after her father, George, died from breast cancer 15 years ago. She said: "Most people associate breast cancer with women so it was a total shock to discover my dad had been diagnosed with this disease. Despite putting up a strong fight for seven years, he sadly passed away in December 1994 and now I want to do all I can to support breast cancer awareness."

Alex continued, "I think Pedal it Pink is a fantastic event to raise money for research and I hope lots of women in the South East will enjoy taking part to help put the "brakes" on breast cancer. Not only that, the 5k family lap is a great way to involve men and hopefully encourage them to check themselves for lumps too - it's not only women who can get this disease."

There are three ride routes to choose from to cater for the amateur to expert cyclist:

  • Full marathon (26.2miles) - Women only
  • Half marathon (13.1miles) - Women only
  • Family lap (5k) - Partners and Children welcome

Pedal it Pink is sponsored by Santander and all the routes are completely enclosed in the park, so it's safe, traffic-free and suitable for both beginners and experienced cyclists.

The Family 5k Lap begins at 10.30am, the Marathon at 10.40am and the Half Marathon at 10.45am.

The registration desk will open at 9.30am. Please come ready to cycle and remember to wear a helmet.

Olympian Cyclist Victoria PendletonOver 6,400 women and 40 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the South East and approximately a quarter of these cases will unfortunately be fatal.  Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and accounts for nearly one in three of all cancers in women. The Breast Cancer Campaign aims to beat breast cancer by funding innovative world-class research to understand how breast cancer develops, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure.

Samantha Gold, Senior Events Manager at Breast Cancer Campaign, said: "We're so pleased to launch Pedal it Pink in the South East and hope that lots of women in the region will take up this unique challenge and contribute to a great cause. The first two Pedal it Pink's have gone so well and we have raised over £100,000 so far! So come on ladies, dig out your bike, find your pinkest outfit and take part in this fun cycling adventure while raising money for charity."

Lee Valley Regional Park Chief Executive Shaun Dawson said: "Lee Valley Regional Park looks forward to hosting the South East's first Pedal it Pink in the beautiful surroundings of the River Lee Country Park.  The Park lends itself perfectly to this event with a safe and traffic-free course winding past rivers, woodlands and lakes. The Park provides excellent cycling routes throughout and has established strong links with cycling over many years, we will also own, fund and manage London 2012's Velopark in legacy. We regularly host a number of fundraising events across the Park and are thrilled to support the Breast Cancer Campaign and help raise funds for this worthy cause."
