Lancashire's Safe Trader Scheme Hits 1,000

Published: 14th March 2012 15:01

A Lancashire scheme that helps people in the county to find out whether a trader will treat them fairly and honestly is celebrating a major milestone.

Building plansSet up in October 2009 by Lancashire County Council's Trading Standards service and Help Direct, the Safe Trader Scheme offers a list of various traders such as plumbers, electricians, builders, gardeners and double glazing firms who have given a commitment to treat customers fairly and honestly.

With the number of traders signed up to the scheme now standing at just over 1,000, County Councillor Albert Atkinson, Cabinet Member responsible for Trading Standards, is pleased the initiative has maintained momentum since it was set up two-and-a-half years ago.

He said: "I'd firstly like to congratulate everyone who's been involved with setting up Lancashire's Safe Trader Scheme - the success has been astonishing. We're still recruiting 25 traders a month, which is a testament to the initiative's popularity.

"When we were discussing the initiative in the late summer of 2009, I never imagined that we would have so many traders on the list. I'd like to thank every one of them for committing themselves to treat people fairly and honestly.

"Once again, I would remind people to consult Lancashire's register of safe traders before agreeing to have any work done. Unfortunately people are still being ripped off, which is why I'm very keen that we continue to promote the Safe Trader Scheme.

"I would like to congratulate Ryan Waine, who owns Ryan Waine Plumbing & Heating, on being the 1,000th trader to join the scheme. I hope that he finds being a member of the scheme will benefit his business, as much as it has for so many other traders who've signed up. "
