SUNDERLAND TO HOST BUPA GREAT NORTH 10K
Sunderland is very proud to be hosting the first Bupa Great North 10k run, on Sunday 12 July 2009. The mass-participation run is open to men and women over 15 years, with the 10k course taking in Sunderland's city centre, riverside, green parks and beautiful coastline.
For the past three years Sunderland City Council has worked with sports marketing agency Nova International to bring the Great Women's Run to Sunderland. This 10k run along the coastline and out to sea along the pier proved so popular that organisers decided to open up the run to men for 2009. While the new run's course is yet to be confirmed, plans in discussion suggest that it will showcase even more of Sunderland's great location.
The Bupa Great North 10k in Sunderland will be made up of all the same elements of other Great Run events, with a selection of the world's best elite runners heading up the front of the field and thousands anticipated to follow in the mass field - running for fun, to challenge themselves or to raise money for charity.
More details of the 10k are on the BUPA Great Run web-site - it costs £25 to enter and you can book online.

On the same Sunday in July Sunderland will also host the Bupa Junior Great Sunderland Run, which is open to young people aged 9 to 14 years and a great chance for young people to have fun and enjoy being physically active. This is a distance of about 2.5 km and will take place after the main 10k run, making it a great day of running for all the family. All entrants will receive their event t-shirt with their race number before the event and all finishers will receive a great goody bag after crossing the finishing line which contains that all important finishers medal to prove you did it !
This costs £9, if you enter before 12 June, £12 afterwards - you can book online here.
