The hosts were only informed they would be playing Germany in a proper Championship match just a few hours before the official face-off time of 7.30pm.
The two teams had been due to play in an exhibition match to keep an army of spectators, but with the Iroquois having yet to arrive the FIL opted to promote Germany to the tournament's top division.
But the European champions didn't let if affect them as they cruised to victory with a thoroughly professional performance. It was sweet revenge for England's agonising 4-1 World Cup defeat to Germany in South Africa.
England needed just over a minute to score their opening goal and were always ahead but at 4-2 had to raise their game to make sure they pulled away from Germany.
A goal just before half-time did the trick for a three-goal welcome cushion at half-time, before England stepped up in the second half and scored six goals without reply to put the contest out of sight.
Germany get on the scoresheet again, but England dominated the second half to make sure they went top of the Blue Division at this early stage.
