Secure Your Number Plates For Free In North West Leicestershire

The Police in North West Leicestershire are teaming up with a local garage to offer free fitting of anti-theft or tamper proof screws for vehicle number plates.
The initiative has been launched following a number of number plate thefts in the area. Since February there have been 35 incidents reported to the police. Now they are working with staff at Coalville Tyre and Exhaust in Hugglescote who have kindly agreed to fit tamper proof screws for free.
Crimes committed following the theft of a number plate can include:
- Speeding.
- Illegal parking
- Congestion charges
- Not paying for fuel
- Disguising a stolen vehicle
The new initiative is being launched at 9am on Saturday 23rd June 2012 at Coalville Tyre and Exhaust, 206 Central Road, Hugglescote near Coalville. Motorists can turn up on the day and mechanics will fit the correct screws depending on the make and model of the car. Neighbourhood officers will also be available on the day to offer other crime prevention advice. No appointment is necessary. The garage has also kindly agreed to offer the free service from Saturday to motorists who turn up on an ad hoc basis.
Clutch head screws have a ‘one way' design which makes them virtually impossible to remove.
PCSO Tony Gallagher from Coalville police station said:
"Since February we have had thirty five incidents where vehicle registration plates have been stolen none of which had these screws fitted.
"Number plate thefts continue to be a problem nationally and have increased in recent years. This is partly due to an increase in the use of speed cameras, rise in petrol costs and charges for use of certain roads. We are really pleased to receive the support of a local garage in helping us reduce crime in this area."
John O'Dwyer, the owner of Coalville Tyre and Exhaust, said:
"We understand that the theft of number plates is a problem in the area and causes untold disruption for both individuals and local businesses, we are more than happy to help motorists tackle this type of crime by supporting Leicestershire Police with this campaign."
