Belle Vale optician welcomes four talented apprentices

Author: undefined Published: 14th March 2019 12:37

Specsavers in Belle Vale has welcomed four talented apprentices into the team during the last twelve months to learn the basics of the optical and audiology business.

Three of the four recently completed their year of training at the store and have just qualified to become store assistants. Another new apprentice recently joined the team to work towards qualification, once his twelve-month course comes to an end.

Jamie Mitchell, Megan Wilkinson and Charlie Fitzmaurice trained for 12 months, developing important customer service skills and learning all about the optical, contact lenses and audiology services at the store.
Connor Tighe, who recently joined, is currently getting to grips with working at the store at the start of his apprenticeship scheme.

Specsavers' specialist apprentice service recruited the new team members from schools in the nearby area, supporting the local community.

Store director Mathew Robinson said: 'The apprentices are such a welcome addition to the business. It's a great opportunity for all of them, as in the majority of cases it leads to a job in the business, which can be just the start of a long career with Specsavers.

'Specsavers is very well set up for apprentices, and most of the stores in the region take on young people to train up to eventually work at the stores. We know sometimes they might need to fill knowledge gaps, for example resit GCSE Maths or English or other key skills, and we support this by giving them time to do this as part of their time training with us.'

‘The Specsavers apprenticeship programmes are a fantastic way to begin a rewarding and successful career and our training has been viewed as best in the sector by Ofsted.

‘As long as you're a hard worker, punctual and ambitious you will do well at Specsavers and there is plenty of opportunity to continue your development.'

With National Apprentice Week this week (4 - 10 March), it's a great time to highlight what Specsavers in Belle Vale has in place for apprentices and the opportunities within the Specsavers group as a whole for apprentices.

There are several different apprenticeship opportunities, including lab roles, optical assistant, customer service or retail. The scheme is open to anyone from the age of 16 including recent school or college leavers or those looking for a new challenge, all that is required is a grade D or higher in GCSE Maths and English.

Each course includes monthly assessor visits, observations, online learning and courses. Apprentices also learn on the job, working in-store alongside qualified professionals and becoming part of the team, with 94 per cent of apprentices nationally taking on a full time role at Specsavers when they have finished their training.
