Remembering the Valkyries

Author: James Chalmers Published: 10th April 2014 18:03

Running in parallel with his writing career, James Chalmers, who lives in Neston, is a filmmaker.

His current project is a documentary about the 1960s Mersey Beat group - The Valkyries.   Three of the four group members on this publicity photograph, which was taken on Bidston Hill in 1964, were students at Park High Grammar School, Birkenhead.   Allen Burton, John Adams and Tony (John) Conway.  The fourth member, Ian Hunter, was at St Anselms.

James would like to include a school photograph, either 1959 or 1960, which will show the three Park High members as teenagers.  He's tried Wirral Archives and other possible sites, but hasn't so far managed to track down a photograph. School Photographs were an annual event and taken by a panoramic camera with the students and staff arranged on tiers of tables and chairs.  The resulting photograph was long and narrow and someone somewhere may have one of these rolled up in a drawer.

The Valkyries rubbed shoulders with the Beatles and many other famous Liverpool bands of the day.  They reform every year in November for Ian Hunter's birthday bash, and the 2013 event was filmed to provide material for the documentary.

UPDATE - 14.4.2014:  Thank you to Mrs Hannah who has been in touch and has the photos James was searching for.  James said: "I now have the loan of 1958 and 1960 school photos which will be invaluable re the Valkyries documentary.

"AboutMyArea has certainly proved its worth."

Gosh, I have a vague recollection of The Valkyries though I think via my older brother as I would have been very young at the time. I'd be interested in seeing the documentary, how and where might I be able to do that please James?
