National Non Smoking Day Wed 9th March

Published: 8th March 2011 23:54

National Non Smoking Day this year is Wednesday 9th March, There is plenty of support out there to help people quit and become smoke free.

 Established in 1983, No Smoking Day works to support smokers who want to quit. The charity does this by raising awareness the Day, which takes place on the second Wednesday in March every year, and highlighting the many sources of help available for quitters.

Every year over a million smokers will use No Smoking Day to try to quit.

There are many benefits to quitting, including -

* Able to exercise with more ease
* Breathe better
* Improves Asthma
* Reduces risk of heart disease
* Reduces chance of a heart attack
* Saves a lot of money on a weekly basis
* You wont smell anymore!

Lots of local Doctors and Chemists offer smoking Cessation clinics, where you go along and they dicuss the best nicotine replacement option for the individual whether it be Patches, Gum, Lozenges or The Inhilator.

There are also tablets that you take for a certain period whilst still smoking, but these are only available through your GP.

They will take some details about you, how many you smoke a day and then measure the level of carbon monoxide in your body. This is done by blowing into a tube which is attached to a digital computer which will then tell you your level. This is usually between around 5 and 40, with 40 being very high. The target level will be under 5.

The Nurse you see at the Doctors or Pharmacy will then help you to decide on a day to quit and provide you with the prescription they think would best suit you. You will then go back once a week to see how you are getting on, and your carbon monoxide levels will be tested where they can see if you have either cut down or stopped.

Contact your local GP or Pharmacy to get details of their clinics and get yourself booked in today!
