The shoes and slippers have been added to "The Finishing Touch" exhibition at the Port Sunlight Gallery. The display tells the story of the changing role of women in society between 1830 and 1940 and how this was reflected in ladies' fashion.
Other items include hats, gloves and jewellery which has not been seen before. Curator of the exhibition Alyson Pollard has said that Queen Victoria did a lot of walking on her Balmoral estate and made walking popular for women of that time.
The Shoes on exhibition and a pair of black corded shoes with little bows on the front and patent leather tips on the toes. They would have been for every day wear in the house and outside in fair weather. They are straight soled shoes and back then, the shoes were made the same shape for both left and right feet.
The slippers on show belonged to Alexandra Princess of Wales, they are a beautiful green colour, embroidered with flowers and leaves on the front. They are a mule so they've got a low heel and a big fur trim. They were embroidered by Princess Alexander's dresser who had them made as a gift for her.
In the 1830's, women stayed indoors and their clothing and shoes reflect that.
