Family History Centre in Cosham - Hampshire Genealogical Society

Author: RichardRickyPalmer Published: 10th March 2012 08:43

Family history, otherwise known as Genealogy, is one of the fasted growing hobbies in the UK. I have been interested in my family history for several years. Since watching the first episode of Who Do You Think You Are on TV, I was hooked: This sent me on a quest to find out all I could about my grandparents, their parents and further generations back through the centuries. I have been fascinated by my discoveries of my ancestors' lives and the many stories that have come to light since I first started populating my family tree.

I was delighted to find that the Hampshire Genealogy Society have recently relocated to their new base in Cosham - right on my doorstep! So I gave them a ring and popped in to have a looked at the many records that they have in their research room. They were very friendly and helped me look up the births, marriages and burials of some of my ancestors who lived in the Portsea area in the 18th and 19th centuries.

 What is genealogy?

Genealogy, otherwise known as Family History, is one of the fasted growing hobbies in the UK. Genealogy comes from the Greek word 'Genea' meaning 'family', and 'Logos' meaning knowledge. Genealogy is the study of a family's lineage, a dictionary describes it as "...history of the descent of families; the pedigree of a particular person or family." Historically, genealogy was important, as family connections between nobility were crucial to the idea of inheritance and the passing down of titles and rulership.
