Tranport for London's Low Emission Zone
If you drive anything other than a car or a motor-bike, then please make sure that you are not caught out by driving into London's Low Emission Zone area on or after 3rd January 2012. (In our locality, this kicks in on the A10 immediately south of the M25 - see the map here.)
Although cars and motor-bikes are exempt, for other vehicles including many 4x4s, vans, and pickups there could be a £100 per day charge to pay (£200 for larger vehicles).
If a charge is due and not paid, there is a penalty of £500 or £1000 depending on the vehicle (which is halved if paid within 14 days).
Please do not think that these charges only apply during certain hours, or only on weekdays, because the charges are applicable 24 hours a day, 365 days a year including Bank Holidays. What's more, the charges are applied by date, so if you drive into the Zone at one minute to midnight, and drive out two minutes later at one minute past midnight, that is registered as two days, so there would be two days' charges to pay.
However, the good news is the the charges do NOT apply to every vehicle. The age of original registration, the unladen (and gross) weight, and modifications (if any) are among several criteria that will determine whether a charge is made.
