Day out with dad at the National Trust

How will you treat your dad this Father's Day? Whether he loves fine food and beer, is a classic car fan, or simply enjoys getting out into the great outdoors, the National Trust has everything you need to help dad have a great day out. From special events to simple pursuits, spend quality time with your dad and celebrate his big day in 2012.

Here are our top tips for Father's Day:

The great outdoors

With acres of stunning countryside, estates and gardens, there are plenty of places to explore for a dad who loves the wilderness and being in the great outdoors.

Blakeney National Nature Reserve, Norfolk:

One of the largest expanses of unspoilt coastline in Europe, this ever changing landscape will refresh the senses. Take a boat trip to Blakeney Point and spot the grey seals basking in the sun.

Dunwich Heath, Suffolk:

A rare and precious habitat nestling on the Suffolk coast, Dunwich Heath offers the chance of being at one with nature.

Hatfield Forest, Essex:

Walking amongst the trees at Hatfield Forest is like walking through a thousand years of undisturbed history. Once used by medieval royalty, today, it is a wonderful open space for everyone to enjoy.

Boys and their toys

For a dad who loves his model motors, then we have just the thing for him this Father's Day, where you can combine classic displays with a great day out in stunning surroundings.

Oxburgh Hall, Norfolk:

Boys & Their Toys Weekend - Saturday 16 & Sunday 17 June, 11am- 4pm

Join us on Father's Day for this perennially popular event, with displays by various model clubs. Bittern Amateur Radio Club will be broadcasting from Oxburgh Hall. Normal admission

Day out with dad at the National TrustAnglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire:

Father's Day Treat - 17 June

Members of the Hornby Railway Collectors Association display and operate models from the 1920s to the 1960s.  Bring back childhood memories or create some new ones.  Enjoy the vintage train display in Robinson Room. Free event.  Normal opening hours and admission rates apply.

Get on your bike

For the perfect day out with an active dad, hop on your bicycle (or hire one) and set out on our miles of cycle paths across some spectacular settings.

Blicking Estate, Norfolk:

Hire a bike and enjoy Blickling and its surrounding areas on two wheels. Keep an eye out for a mile long lake, a pyramid-shaped mausoleum and a tower-shaped grandstand on Blickling's network of cycle paths.

Dunstable Downs, Bedfordshire:

Cycling Fit Father's Day - Sunday 17 June

Keep fit and active by joining the Father's Day cycle ride at Dunstable Downs. Come along and join Nick Gracie from Open Adventure and take part in a cycle ride. There are two routes to choose from the 100Km or 150Km, expect a couple of hills and some beautiful views along the way. You can start the event whenever you like between 7.30am and 10.00am. The course will close at 5.00pm. You will receive an electronic timing device to record your times. £25 per person, eentry will be £30 cash on the day.

A historic day out

For a dad who's a bit of a history buff, take him for a trip into the past at some of our historic locations.

Wimpole Estate, Cambridgeshire:

At the heart of this working estate is the Georgian mansion where rich interiors upstairs contrast with the modest surroundings of the servants areas downstairs.

Lavenham Guildhall, Suffolk:

The beautifully preserved medieval village of Lavenham is a must see for anyone visiting Suffolk for the first time. At its heart of the impressive Guildhall, one of the finest timber framed buildings in the county.

Glorious gardens

There's nothing better for a green-fingered dad than a day out in one of our spectacular gardens. Gain inspiration by the spectacular surroundings, and don't forget to stop off in our plants shops for a souvenir of the day.

Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire:

The 114-acre garden offers inspiration and planting for all seasons, with borders, meadows and avenues bursting with vibrant colour, delicious scent and the simple pleasures of nature.

Ickworth House, Suffolk:

The Italianate gardens at Ickworth house are defiantly worth a visit; admire the statuary, clipped box avenue and evocative Roman cypresses.

The National Trust's retail range is pretty eclectic mix which means it's just the place to start when buying gifts for Father's Day.
