GODMANCHESTER 2012 CELEBRATIONS
This year Godmanchester is celebrating the 800th Anniversary of receiving its charter from King John in 1212. Although there was a Roman town, Durovigutum, at Godmanchester, it was King John's charter that made it a self-governing manor, a fitting forerunner to the thriving community it is today.

RYTHM IN BLUE - RAF BAND CONCERT- ST MARY'S CHURCH

Two-day market with 40 stalls selling Antiques, Historic Artefacts & Memorabilia
Stalls in Mill Yard car park and along the path to the recreation ground to the refreshment/picnic area by the play equipment.

LIVING HISTORY WEEKEND
GODMANCHESTER RECREATION GROUND
(Ample FREE parking by the War Memorial)
Centuries ago we were invaded by Romans and Danes. The Romans built a Fort and the Mill Lade (river at the Causeway) was excavated by the Danes, using Godmanchester as a major base with much of Godmanchester's road system dating from before the Norman Conquest. The Roman military encampment will re-create training and battle tactics, with the civilian encampment demonstrating cooking, craft skills, writing, medicine and other interesting things to get involved in.
The Viking encampment can be inspected by visitors who can try on clothing, watch demonstrations of weaving, leatherwork, jewellery making and cooking and listen to Viking storytelling. Arena events will include a skirmish, with Viking boats returning to the river.
The Medieval encampment will host singing, dancing and demonstrations of squire training showing fighting techniques and armour requirements. As well as the many demonstrations, the Knights will involve themselves in the Grand Mělée (fight to the death) - twice daily!
As part of our history involved resisting potential invaders more successfully, there will also be outlines of World War II activities through military demonstrations and features on activities on the Home Front - especially about Wash Days. We will also discover what happens when a German bomb is discovered on the Recreation Ground.
