Around Britten with Matthew Barley

Celebrating the centenary of Benjamin Britten's birth in 2013, Matthew Barley brings his tour to Grange Barn - the only performance in Essex. The programme will be built around Britten's Third Suite for solo cello, and will also include a suite by JS Bach, a work by Tavener, and new commissions from James MacMillan, Dai Fujikura and Norwegian DJ/composer Jan Bang.

Performed by The Lord Chamberlain's Men, this all male troupe of travelling players breathes new life into this summer comedy classic. As You Like It runs the glorious gamut of pastoral romance: cross-dressing and love-notes; poetry, gentle satire and slapstick and passion.
The Plot: Rosalind, the daughter of a banished duke, falls in love with Orlando at a wrestling match, but her usurping uncle, jealous of her popularity, banishes her from court. Disguised as a boy she seeks out her father and his friends in the Forest of Arden. Here she meets Orlando again and, under the guise of a young man, counsels him in the art of love.

Join us for a guided four-mile walk retracing the route of the former Great Eastern Railway Line linking the medieval wool towns of Lavenham and Long Melford. Meet at Lavenham Guildhall Tearoom for refreshments and a short introduction before starting your walk. At the end of the walk, enjoy lunch at Melford Hall and a chance to look around the house. A very special chance to photograph Orford Ness in the morning and evening light, with the rest of Saturday available to continue photographing up until the last ferry off the Ness at 5pm. You will be guided and supervised by rangers from the site and a professional photographer who has been photographing the site for many years. Their combined experience and knowledge will help you get the most out of the day by offering historic knowledge of the site and creative and technical advice.
