A car park in the heart of Towcester could be secured for public use after South Northamptonshire Council’s (SNC) offer to buy it was accepted by the owners.

The Co-Op Supermarket off Richmond Road has been unoccupied for some time and includes around 70 public parking spaces.

The council will not be able to reveal its ambitions for the future of the site until the deal is completed over the next few months and the sale approved by a meeting of the Full Council; but the free car parking on the site will be safeguarded for the future once the council’s acquisition is completed.

SNC Leader, Cllr Ian McCord, said: “This is money generated by the sale of homes in Towcester which is being invested back into the town and it’s a one-off opportunity to secure parking for shoppers, residents and businesses.

“We’ve made huge strides over recent years with the Moat Lane regeneration the other side of the high street, and I’m delighted that we now have this exciting opportunity to improve the town further.”

The acquisition has been made possible through additional payments by developers on the deals done to redevelop the Moat Lane and Springfields sites in Towcester.

SNC struck these deals when the housing market was flat but foresaw a circumstance that house prices could recover and made provision in the deals that if that happened additional money would be paid to the council.

Is he building included, or is it only the car park being purchased? The headlines suggests both, but thhe details could also imply it is only the car park being bought.

That said, it is good that the parking is being secured, and there might be an opportunity to amend the layout to increase spaces, and also fix the damaged surface too.

For the avoidance of doubt, the car park and the building are part of the sale.

Hopefully the building will be demolished and the whole site can become a multi-storey car park.

Great that SNC have bought this site. Excellent news. The car parking should become a shoppers car park again, to encourage retail business in the town centre. Since the days of Somerfield, it has been used for long term office parking, which does not help town centre traders. Refurbishment/redevelopment of the old Somerfield building should encourage shoppers to use the Sponne Shopping arcade shops. Also the plans should include proper waste management for all the shops.
