Urgent Appeal for Food on Behalf of the Towcester FoodbankUrgent Appeal for Food on Behalf of the Towcester Foodbank - collection box at Bell Plantation, Towcester.

Miranda Wixon trustee of Towcester Foodbank writes to AboutMyArea/NN12 "We face unprecedented times in the history of the Foodbank with more people than ever turning to Foodbanks to provide  emergency food in times of crisis.

"In Towcester in October this year Towcester Foodbank provided food for 232 people, of which 106 were children, the year before in October it was 132. (94% of people coming to a foodbank are destitute*) and this demand has increased in November to a level three times greater than in 2018.

"Foodbanks are facing a challenging winter ahead.  The Trussell Trust, the largest provider of Foodbanks provided a detailed report last week the highlights are at the bottom of this article.

"Towcester Foodbank urgently needs more food to respond to the predicted rise in demand during the winter.  Priorities for donations are protein with meat at the top of the list; e.g. ham, steak and kidney pies, spam, meatballs, chilli con carne, corned beef, hot dogs or any other tinned meat, followed by fish.

"At this time of year we also provide Christmas items.  Collection boxes are in all of the churches in the Towcester area and in Towcester itself there are boxes in Waitrose, Tesco, Nationwide, Bell Plantation and BP (Marks and Spencer) or you can drop donations in to the Foodbank on Tuesday between 12 - 2 and Friday between 10-12 at Islington Road, Towcester.

"There are many ways in which the Towcester community raise donations including secret santa, advent collections, coffee mornings to help this local service look after it's neighbours.

"There are over 50 people who currently volunteer for the Towcester Food bank who give their time to support your donations getting to the people who need them.

"Let Towcester Foodbank know if there are any ways in which we can help you to help us provide emergency food parcels to the Towcester Community.

An excellent appeal.

However many acquaintances of mine are under the impression that anyone can just turn up and request food. Possibly the issue of entitlement can be included in any advertising. Even on the collection boxes, as it would help alleviate this misconception?.
