BADBY & FARTHINGSTONE CC: AND THE WINS KEEP ON COMING

Published: 25th June 2019 15:42

cricket team pic With their latest victory - against old rivals South Northants Council in an evening 20/20 match - making it five wins out of seven for the season, the newly amalgamated Badby&Farthingstone CC are flying high.

After a confidence-boosting three wins from their first four matches in May, the team made the short trip to Braunston Paddox CC for a 40 over match.

And set to make 142, the visitors looked to have the match in their grasp with just 15 runs needed, overs to spare and wickets in hand - what could possibly go wrong? Well pretty much everything as three wickets fell in quick succession for the delighted home side to win by 12 runs.

Stephen Nelligan produced the best batting form before having to retire at 25, ably supported by captain Charlie Ashmore, newcomer Joe Phillips and Mike Constant.

Earlier an inspired opening three-wicket spell by Graeme Whitcroft put Braunston on the ropes from which they never really recovered. Oh B&FCC how did you lose this?

The following Sunday (June 9) saw the return home fixture against Spencer Bruerne CC, a four-wicket win in another tightly fought affair played in a superb spirit by both sides.

Batting first the visitors made 142 from their 30 overs with last season's player of the year Will Dicks making an immediate impression with the ball on his return to action, ably assisted by club newcomers Joe Phillips and Andrew Alsworth who both chipped in with valuable wickets.

In reply, the latter also performed well with the bat, Joe hitting 4 fours in one memorable over, the ball crashing to the boundary close to the nearby Badby Woods - superb batting. However, despite another impressive knock by Stephen Nelligan, when skipper Charlie Ashmore was sixth out there were signs of worry in the home ranks, especially given what had happened the previous week.

But with 25 runs still to get, Graeme Whitcroft joined Andrew Alsworth at the crease and these two saw their side home with over six overs to spare.

Unfortunately the bad weather put paid to the next match at Mears Ashby on June 16 before the following Thursday saw the team, chasing 124 against South Northants in a 20/20 affair, win with wickets to spare thanks mainly to acting skipper Stephen Nelligan's stunning undefeated 58.
