Northamptonshire County Council is encouraging local employers to pledge their support for the most vulnerable children in society as part of a landmark national work scheme launching this month.

The Care Leaver Covenant is a new government initiative for employers and organisations to offer work experience and training opportunities for young people as they leave the care system.

Businesses in Northants are urged to consider signing up to the scheme which is backed by every government department and join businesses such as Amazon, Rolls-Royce and Barclays to create 10,000 work opportunities for young people leaving care over the next ten years.

The Covenant will help care leavers navigate the work opportunities available and support them in fulfilling their career ambitions, offering access to support including training workshops and life-skills coaching.

Over 50 businesses, charities and organisations have signed up so far offering young people the opportunity to gain vital skills and experiences as they enter the jobs market.

County council cabinet member for children’s services, Victoria Perry said: “I’m thrilled that this initiative is now a reality and will provide meaningful and practical work opportunities.

“County firms are encouraged to play their part and offer a career kick-start to one of the 100 young people leaving care each year in Northamptonshire, by signing up to the scheme.

“With 40 per cent of care leavers in the UK aged 19 to 21 not in education, employment or training (NEET), compared to 13 per cent for this age group overall, urgent work is needed to make sure they get the best start in adulthood”.
