Children will continue to get a taste for adventure at Longtown Outdoor Learning Centre after an agreement for it to be sold to The Wilson Foundation has secured its future.

Northamptonshire County Council has agreed the sale of Longtown Outdoor Learning Centre to The Wilson Foundation, who will continue to offer outdoor education opportunities for young people.

The sale of Longtown ensures the continued employment of staff, achieving best value for the council and securing the long-term future of the service.

The Wilson Foundation is a charitable youth development organisation for Northamptonshire based in the county which has supported and invested in Longtown for many years.

The newly established Longtown Outdoor Learning Trust (LOLT) will continue to operate it as an outdoor education centre and honour all existing bookings.

As part of the purchase, The Wilson Foundation has committed to invest in significantly improving facilities and making it “a nationally renowned centre of excellence for outdoor education”.

Northamptonshire County Council cabinet member for children, families and education Cllr Victoria Perry said: “It’s great to see that these fantastic outdoor activities that Northamptonshire children have enjoyed over decades will continue.

“The memorable experiences which children receive at Longtown not only have an immediate impact on shaping their confidence and life-skills but, by introducing them to outdoor activities, can go on to have a positive impact on their health and mental wellbeing throughout their lives.”

Longtown Outdoor Learning Centre is a 70 bed residential centre for young people in the picturesque surroundings of Brecon Beacons National Park on the Welsh border of Herefordshire.

The facility has two main buildings; The Courthouse, a grade II listed building and the Monnow Wing, an accommodation block with disabled access together with training rooms, stores and a workshop. The 16 acre site also has a range of activity equipment including a canoe training pool, climbing tower, ropes courses and woodland.

The sale is due for completion on 1st September 2018.
