Tony McMurray Sets Off For Everest

"Today is the day that I have been planning towards for over a year now. My two large bags and ruck sack are packed, my emergency altitude tablets are safely in place, my water purification is at the ready and all my hiking gear is checked and double checked (also have a cheeky small bottle of Baileys should I get to the target in one piece for a celebratory drink J)
3 weeks gear for Himalaya
Many thanks to those of you who have sent me messages of good luck support for my trip.
Despite having done numerous crazy challenges over the past 10 years for The Alzheimer’s Society I have to admit to a having a strong sense of apprehension ahead of this trip. A bit like a kid ready for their first day of school… A mixture of 3 weeks away from home, in an area completely outside of my comfort zone, no immediate friends or family around me, the high altitude to cope with, the physical challenge, limited washing and cleaning facilities available and add to that the fact that 2015 is the first climbing season following the dreadful deaths from an Avalanche last April that closed the mountain route for the rest of the season.
…. that said as in all things in my approach to life I am willing to work outside of my comfort zone to fulfil a lifelong dream of visiting Mount Everest… in doing so I hope to raise more than £5k for my Charity, The Alzheimer’s Society, for whom I am a registered Volunteer. Both y mother and her sister passed away in the past few years with Dementia.
If you have been impacted by Dementia or know of someone who has an affinity with the condition I would appreciate you visiting my fundraising site below to consider a donation. As a reminder this challenge, as with all my challenges, is self-funded and self-organised with 100% of funds raised going directly to The Alzheimer’s Society.

As with my recent Thames Path Challenge in 2014 I hope to post a regular blog as and when WIFI allows…. What I do know is that should I get to Everest Base Camp it does have WIFI. Given my ability to get myself into all sorts of scrapes during my challenges I hope my regular updates bring a smile to your daily grind and also an insight into the world of a charity fundraiser.
My main message to my friends and loved ones is that I will make sure I stay safe and take no unnecessary risks…..
Kind Regards
Tony
