A Beautiful Autumn

Last weekend we had to take down three mature Horse Chestnuts as they were all infected with fungus, the insides of the trees had gone soft and pithy.
In his regular blog and chatter with AboutMyArea/NN12 Ashley Warren, owner of Towcester's Bell Plantation Garden Centre on the A43/A5 roundabout said, "I’ve had to sleep with the bedroom window shut for the last 7 days due to the noise outside. Last Saturday I took all the calves away from the cows, at 7 – 8 months old its about time they stopped enjoying the milky bar. The noise level created by 38 bellowing cattle 24/7 was more than we could sleep through. My apologies to the inhabitants of Wappenham, I hope you enjoy our beef.
"What a fantastic Autumn so far? With a few cold nights in the last couple of weeks, shortening day length, the metabolism of plants is starting to slow as we slide into winter. The colours of some plant leaves are absolutely amazing, Liquidamber styraciflua, Prunus sargentii, Crataegus priunifolia etc.
"As days shorten and temperatures begin to decline in the autumn, the food-making photosynthetic processes slow and the leaf shifts into nutrient-saving mode. Chlorophyll is broken down to salvage nitrogen, the green colour vanishes, and the more slowly degrading oranges and yellows are revealed. A pigment called anthocyanin is produced at this time of year in many species, adding purples and reds to the palette.
What we don’t need is strong winds, as they shorten the glory of Autumn, blowing all the leaves off the trees.
Tree Felling
"Last weekend we had to take down three mature Horse Chestnuts as they were all infected with fungus, the insides of the trees had gone soft and pithy. Giles and Will felled these trees with ease, all straight down the middle before lunch. I have now got the task of chopping them all up into firewood! Busy weekend. Chestnut wood is best burnt in a wood burner as it sometimes spits out sparks.
Pasties
"Sarah and the Cafe team are now producing Pasties and Scotch eggs for sale in the Farm shop. There is also some Wappenham frozen beef still available in the Farm Shop. We are constantly looking for Cooks and front of house to help in the Cafe, if you are interested or know anyone might be interested drop me a line.
"Plenty of Autumn colour available to put in your Gardens, book some colour for the spring by planting some flowering bulbs.
"Another good weather weekend forecast, make the most of it and get outside."
