Towcester Afternoon Horse Racing Preview

HISTORY tells us that Wiltshire trainer Seamus Mullins has an excellent Towcester record during the spring months and the fact he saddled a double in Northamptonshire on Monday could also give a pointer to the course’s last fixture before October on Monday afternoon.
Towcester action on Monday is due to get underway at 2.25pm and Mullins, whose Wilsford Stables base is near Amesbury, has made entries for both Westerberry and Boola River.
Mullins has regularly farmed Towcester meetings over the years, enjoying 20 winners at the Easton Neston track over the past 14 seasons. Significantly, 14 of those winners have come in April, May or June.
At last Monday evening’s meeting, Mullins book ended the seven race card by sending out 2/1 shot Passing Dream to take the opening 2m mares’ maiden hurdle before ending the night’s proceedings in equally satisfactory fashion by winning the National Hunt Flat race with Granitic, a 5/1 chance.
This was a touch ironic as Granitic was ridden by Jeremiah McGrath, the pairing holding off odds-on favourite Jen’s Boy from the Nicky Henderson camp. McGrath rode a winner for Henderson at Towcester the week before with Ballinure.
Westerberry has been given two entries by Mullins and could contest either the 2m handicap chase at 2.55pm or the concluding totesport.com Download The App Conditional Jockeys’ Mares’ Handicap Hurdle over 1m 7 1/2f, the last race at Towcester until October 10.
Elsewhere on the Towcester card, local trainer Caroline Bailey has made a brace of entries for the six year-old Reckless Behavior, which was a winner on his penultimate start in a two and a half mile handicap hurdle at Market Rasen on April 11.
The trainer enjoyed a recent Towcester success with Malapie and has Reckless Behavior entered up in both a 2m handicap hurdle and a 2m 5 1/2f novices’ chase.
Caroline Fryer has been enjoying plenty of winners under Rules and in the point to point field recently and could be on the mark with the quirky Riddlestown.
However, punters beware... this horse comes with a government health warning! Apparently cruising to victory at Towcester on Monday evening, several lengths clear on the approach to the last, this quirky individual then idled on the run in, allowing himself to be caught by the Donald McCain-trained Mahler Lad.
Riddlestown is a better horse on this type of going but is not always guaranteed to go through with his effort.
