Failed Conservatives Replaced by Civil Servants

Following the recent devastating report into the many failures of Conservative run Northamptonshire County Council the Government has decided to send Commissioners to take over from local Tory councillors. Northamptonshire County Council together with district and borough councils in Northamptonshire are to be abolished and replaced by new all-purpose councils.

Commentating Councillor Martin Johns says: “NCC is called the ‘worst-run council in the country’ and so it’s not surprising civil servants are to be sent to take over its financial management and make changes to how key decisions are scrutinised. Commissioners may also take over other key aspects of the council once they have assessed how bad the situation is. Years of poor decision making and mismanagement by the Conservatives has left the council with debts, little in its reserves and ever deteriorating services. According to the scathing report, a culture of secrecy and bullying by leading Tories has made matters even worse.”

Liberal Democrat Leader at South Northants Council, Councillor Chris Lofts says: “Liberal Democrats will support any realistic plans that protect the best of local government in South Northamptonshire. Joint arrangements with Cherwell Council, for example, should if at all possible be kept. Local residents should not be punished for the mismanagement of their council by the failed Conservatives. Its local people who should decide on what best fits our largely rural area. Liberal Democrats will resist any form of local government simply imposed on local people by Westminster.”

Councillor Lofts added: “'Liberal Democrats are concerned that the same individuals who failed to run Northamptonshire County Council properly may put themselves forward in elections for the new councils. Lib Dems believe that if those who have bankrupted the council and destroyed services are re-elected, mistakes will only be repeated.”

Lets hope the Commissioners realise that the move to Cabinet Government, carried out throughout the Northamptonshire area, leads to a far more narrow decision making process. Other elected councilors, of possibly different persuasions, just do not have a voice as they should do. Maybe the reason for the culminating disaster in the NCC?

At the very least this move should be investigated?
