20 Year Old Conservative Jonathan Riley Wins Middleton Cheney By-Election

The Conservative Party has won the Middleton Cheney By-Election to South Northamptonshire Council. Jonathan Riley, 20, was elected for the Conservatives with 391 votes or 42.1%. In second place were the Liberal Democrats with 316 votes, followed by Labour with 183 votes and Green Party candidate who polled 38 votes.

Speaking after the vote Jonathan Riley said “This was a hard and difficult election given the back drop and events in Northants recently. I am delighted to have won and will serve the people of Middleton Cheney to get results. Although the Conservative Party has needed to make some unpopular choices recently, the alternatives being offered were lacking credibility and we have at South Northants a long track record of putting residents first and delivering quality services.”

Leader of South Northamptonshire Council, Ian McCord said “Jonathan is a young and energetic Councillor who is the future of the party both locally and nationally. I look forward to working alongside him as we strive to bring the values and culture of the district councils to any new structures that may be set up in the future.”

The by election was caused following the retirement of Judith Baxter.

Wonder what his attendance will be like when he swans off back to University! Funny seeing his literature about saving the services his own party are cutting. Good luck to the bloke.

In his leaflet he says that: "I (have) gained a deep understanding of how local government works..." So how come he isn't even registered to vote in South Northamptonshire? Apparently he's 'qualified' to stand for election here because he can claim residency at his parents' home in Brackley. There was nothing to stop him from registering to vote here even though it's alleged he's usually 150 miles away at university. He'll need a strong voice if it's to carry back to Middleton Cheney.

Hi Charlie,

Just regarding the comment about myself not being registered in South Northants to vote. The reasons why at the time of the poll, I was not registered to vote was due to a recent move a house. I have lived in South Northants for all of my life, and was born in Horton Hospital. I have previously been registered to vote for all national polls, and have voted in such within South Northants.

Many thanks,
