At a meeting of South Northamptonshire Council held on 23 October 2019 the plight of EU Citizens who live and work in the area, as the country heads towards a chaotic Brexit was highlighted by Liberal Democrats.

Councillor Chris Lofts told the meeting: “As our country argues and debates Brexit, we must not forget the personal impact the uncertainty causes for EU citizens resident in our local community.”

Government has put in place a scheme for EU nationals to establish a ‘settled status’ allowing them to stay in the UK if Brexit happens but many still seem unaware of their position.

Councillor Lofts went on to say: “We know that many EU, EEA or Swiss citizens may not know what their rights are and how to apply under the settled status scheme.”

After the meeting Councillor Martin Johns said: “I am pleased that South Northamptonshire Council offered to publish more information in SNC Review. That may help EU Nationals in reducing the stress they are under.”

The SNC Website has links to the Government information about the settled status scheme at https://www.southnorthants.gov.uk/info/313/brexit and it was agreed that greater effort should be made to let EU Citizens know about the website.

Concerned EU Nationals can also go direct to the government website https://www.gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizens-families

Councillor Lofts adds: “As Liberal Democrats we firmly believe that the UK will be much better off remaining part of the European Union. What we must do, though, is make sure that if this Tory Government pushes through a disastrous bad deal or no deal Brexit, our EU national friends and family living in our communities here in South Northamptonshire are supported and informed of their rights.”

Whilst this is all wonderful spin from the Lib Dems they also proposed that SNC illegally use data to try to identify and write to non UK EU nationals. This they had to withdraw when the legal officers in council gave them advice.

The council was united that those living and working here are entitled to remain undisrupted and we will continue to use all legal channels open to us and support national media where possible to ensure the message is communicated widely.

The council has had a Brexit page on its website for some time

It seems like a nice gesture to write to them to advise. Might make them feel less like they are an afterthought in this whole process. Maybe they did not know about the legalities at the time. I have got to say Ian, I love the irony of the Lib Dem spin comment when all we get is Tory spin from yourself and your party, both locally and nationally. Your replies contains enough spin as your accusing the Lid Dems of attempting something "illegal" with no back story.

Also as the Leader of South Northants shouldnt you be showing some more respect to your colleagues, instead of slandering them online? If your the leader of our Council then we have no hope. Very nasty indeed Ian. No wonder Towcester seem to vote for the Lib Dems locally. Horrible stuff.
