Officers from Northamptonshire Police, County Council and Fire & Rescue Service joined forces today as part of the Casualty Reduction Partnership to create a campaign to highlight road safety around schools.
Using a hydraulic platform, Fire & Rescue officers took an aerial photo of students at Greens Norton Primary School near Towcester, whilst Police officers ensured the road was safe. The pupils were pictured lying in the road on zig zag markings to raise awareness of the issue of parking outside schools. The photos will be used to create a poster and banner campaign that will be displayed at schools throughout the county.
Jane Docking, Chair of Governors at Greens Norton Primary School, said: “We have big problems with people parking on the zig zags outside our school and it makes it difficult for children to see the road safely. It’s very easy when you’re running late to simply park you car on the zig zags, but I hope this campaign will make people think about where they park, not only at our school but also at schools throughout the county.”
The school’s Junior Road Safety Officers, Alanis Smith and Lulu Rock, who educate the rest of the school about road safety issues, said: “We really enjoy telling our friends about road safety and speaking in assemblies. Today has been lots of fun and we hope people will realise how important it is to park safely as being safer on the roads saves lives.”
The aerial photos taken are now being used to design posters and banners for the campaign, which will be launched later this year.
