Following persistent problems with fly-tipping and illegal use by businesses, South Northamptonshire Council (SNC) is reviewing the recycling facilities provided at the Oxford Road Tesco in Brackley.
The bottle banks and blue bins are provided for household use only. However the council has reason to believe that businesses are using these bins to dispose of their waste which is against the law.
There are also problems with the wrong waste going into the recycling bins preventing the contents from being recycled.
In addition, the bins have also become a focus for fly-tipping that costs significant sums to clear up.
Cllr Dermot Bambridge SNC’s Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services, said: “Council staff visit the site several times a week to monitor it and clear rubbish.
“Despite their efforts, we continue to see unauthorised use of the site.
“Fly-tipping is illegal and there are adequate and convenient ways for businesses and residents to dispose of their waste correctly.”
Officers are regularly patrolling the area and will take action against any individual or business found dumping waste at the site in Oxford Road.
All households in Brackley and the surrounding areas have a blue recycling bin at home to recycle a range of materials.
There are also recycling facilities at Farthinghoe Reuse and Recycling Centre, just five miles from Brackley, where householders can recycle a wide range of materials.
SNC is working with the management team of Brackley Tesco to try and resolve the problems. However, if the situation does not improve, the recycling site may unfortunately have to close.
The Council offers a business waste service with regular collections. For more information contact Environmental Services on 01327 322344.
