Lib Dems and Greens urge locals to have their say on councils’ reorganisation

Lib Dems and Greens urge locals to have their say on councils’ reorganisation Lib Dems and Greens urge locals to have their say on councils’ reorganisation

South Northamptonshire Liberal Democrats and the Green Party have issued a joint statement on Local Government Reorganisation in Northamptonshire

The Liberal Democrats and the Green Party in South Northamptonshire agree that local government in Northamptonshire is in need of revitalisation but say that simply changing structure is not enough. Those responsible for breaking the system must be held accountable for their stewardship and Central Government needs to fund local services adequately to reverse the decline over the past decade.

Have your say and hear more about the proposals – the Green Party and local Liberal Democrats have organised a public meeting starting at 7.00 pm on Monday 16 July in St Lawrence Church, Chantry Lane, Towcester.

Successive Conservative administrations at all levels in the county have undermined the quality and availability of local services. Their lack of transparency and failure to have effective procedures for scrutinising decisions have been disastrous for Northamptonshire people. Their policies have impacted most on vulnerable residents with cuts to children’s centres, libraries, bus routes and adult social care.

The financial mismanagement of Northamptonshire County Council has been recognised nationally. Equally to blame has been the chronic underfunding of local government in Northamptonshire by the Conservative Government. Tory MPs have failed to argue that Northamptonshire needs a fairer funding settlement.

Government is now imposing a restructuring of local government and is pushing through a solution of two Unitary Councils. South Northamptonshire is being shoehorned in with Daventry District and Northampton Borough.

This solution cuts across the successful partnership South Northamptonshire evolved with Cherwell Council in Oxfordshire which has delivered real efficiencies and has protected services.

This arrangement has been forced to end and will, almost certainly, result in local people paying higher council tax for poorer services.

Liberal Democrats and Green Party supporters and everyone who values local services are urged to respond to the public consultation on the restructuring through the website www.futurenorthants.co.uk or by accessing paper questionnaires at council offices and libraries across the district. The messages we want to get across to decision makers are:

  • Yes, the system is broken.
  • Restructuring on its own will NOT solve the problems.
  • To rebuild failed services Government needs to increase the funding.
  • Those councillors responsible for past mismanagement must be held accountable.

Government may have already made their mind up about what local government in Northamptonshire could look like. However, it’s not too late to use your voice to make sure that our new councils deliver the best services for our communities by being arranged with the right boundaries, by being given the right funding and above all, ensuring that the voice of communities has a say in decision making.

So much of the above is very agreeable, but only to the minority of our voters.

Time and time again the population in South Northants has voted for "more of the same". Unless the penny has eventually dropped, that proper funding from taxation together with abandoning the likes of the out sourcing regime, I am afraid the status quo will remain. Food banks are not the answer............

I do hope the Greens and Lib/Dems proposals above are fully noted by the restructuring consultation forum.

Why is this article and announcement of a public meeting to be held on the 16th July, being published nearly two weeks after the meeting took place?
And why was it not advertised more widely so that people like myself could have attended?
Like everything to do with this major change in our local affairs, it has been kept very low key. WHY !!!!!!!
