Following publication today [Friday 17th August 2018] of the papers on proposals for the future arrangement of councils across Northamptonshire, Leader of South Northamptonshire Council (SNC), Cllr Ian McCord has made the following statement.

“Let me make it crystal clear– I am beyond angry that we have been bounced into this position, all following Northamptonshire County Council’s financial crisis.

"My heart wants desperately to join the protests against this way forward, but my head recognises that something has to be done.

"The best interests of local residents and businesses always come first for me, and that is why I am with huge regret minded to use my vote so we can sit round the table and positively influence the future, rather than instead voting to protest from the outside and leaving the voice of local interests unheard in the rooms where the big decisions are being taken.”

SNC Councillors will make the decision when they meet on 30th August, ahead of the Government’s deadline for submissions on the 31st.

As this move is a fait accompli I hope Northampton town, its environments and its obvious costs are fairly distributed between the two new authorities?

I can well see difficulties arising out of this issue. Solid boundaries will need to be in place such the inevitable arguments over responsibility are kept to a minimum.

My previous comment on this, that if the county needs 8 authorities to run services, they no doubt still do. The mess that is going to follow with just two doing the job will sorely tax all involved. Also finding Councillors wishing to take on the massive task will be difficult.

There is a phrase "Marry in haste, repent at leisure". Hopefully not applicable here??
