Tributes are being paid to Tony Wilkinson, the former Chairman of South Northamptonshire Council (SNC) who served on both sides of the democratic fence.
Mr Wilkinson, who passed away last weekend, retired from the Council as a housing officer in the mid-1990s and was elected as an SNC member serving the communities of Greens Norton, Bradden and Duncote in 1998.
He was later selected as Vice-Chairman of the Council for 1999-2000 and went on to serve as Chairman 2000-2001. He was a member of SNC until 2015.
Cllr Ian McCord, Leader of SNC, said: “Tony was one of the first people I met when I moved to the district in 2003. He was a South Northants stalwart and a great supporter of a well-run council, perhaps in part because he had seen it from both sides of the fence, both as staff and as an elected member.
“As a former serviceman he was a great supporter of the Royal British Legion and made sure the Council fulfilled its civic role in supporting local veterans and recognising their service. He will be missed.”
During his time as a member of the Council Mr Wilkinson served on a variety of committees, in particular: Planning, Licensing and the Council and Employee Local Joint Committee.
Funeral details are unavailable at this time, but will be published on the Council’s website and social media pages when they are announced.
