Proposals to transform the delivery of children’s services through improved ways of working, streamlined delivery of care and re-investing in essential in-house services of Children First Northamptonshire have been announced.

Northamptonshire County Council is publishing its plans aimed at making sure the needs of the most vulnerable children are met, whilst delivering savings through integrating services and expanding Council-run services.

Plans include the potential redevelopment of the secure unit, increasing occupancy at Council-owned residential homes and plans to reintegrate costly assessment services back in-house, reducing expenditure on external contracts.

The budget proposals mean that by increasing capacity within the county’s fostering network and expanding the availability of places in Council-owned children’s homes, the need for expensive out-of-county residential placements will be reduced.

The proposals include plans to expand the permanent Children First Northamptonshire workforce, with the recruitment of local social workers to further reduce the number of expensive agency staff within the service.

Efficient ways of working will offer dedicated resources to work with individual children, young people, and their families to deliver a streamlined service and improved levels of care.

Cllr Victoria Perry, cabinet member for children’s services said: “The proposals are focused on delivering services more efficiently and looking at innovative ways to reduce costs while protecting the most vulnerable.”

“The plans to reorganise existing contracts within Children First Northamptonshire and integrate them into newly restructured teams are aimed at delivering better value for money whilst coping with the rising demand in the county.”

Cabinet will discuss the proposed 2019/20 budget next week (Tuesday 11th December) at 2 pm.
