To prevent anti-social behaviour barriers are to be installed at the entrance of the car park owned by South Northamptonshire Council (SNC).

SNC boosted the number of free parking spaces in the town centre in the last few years with the addition of the Tove Long Stay and Short Stay car parks, both off Northampton Road in Towcester.

Cllr Phil Bignell, Deputy Leader of SNC, said: “The whole of South Northants has low crime and nowhere near the anti-social behaviour that other parts of the county suffer.

“But unfortunately some motorists have abused the free and easy access to the car park, which is intended for town centre visitors and shoppers, and are a nuisance to nearby residents.

“The Long Stay Car Park has always intended to be closed overnight and the these barriers will stop boy-racers entering the car park in the evenings, but will not hinder genuine car park users leaving whenever they feel like it.”

Once installed a barrier will close-off the entrance to the car park between 6pm and 6am, seven days a week, and dragon’s teeth at the exit will allow one-way travel only out of the car park.

The short stay car park is free to use but usage is restricted weekdays between 8am and 6pm to three hours, with no return within three hours. There are no restrictions on the Long Stay Car Park.

The car park already has barriers, which the police insisted on during the planning stage of the car park development, so I presume the plan is to make them automatic, and to add the dragons teeth barrier too (which isn't there yet)

I'd also question the statement about adding free spaces in the town centre. To be classed as town centre parking, they need to be 400m from the town centre, and this car park is nowhere near that. This is classed as commuter parking according to planning rules and standards.
