Cyclists are being reminded to invest in high quality locks after a rise in bike thefts across the county with thieves targeting people’s Christmas presents.

A lot of people got a new bike for Christmas this year and for many people, their bike is more than a possession – it could be their way to work or how they stay fit and healthy. However, a bike is also an attractive target for thieves who have been stealing them from outside shops across the county in recent days.

PCSO David Bryan, said: “There has been an increase in the number of bikes stolen in the Rushden area and across the whole county recently so I want to take this opportunity to appeal to people to please invest in a high quality lock and to take a look at our crime prevention tips.

“It’s easy to make your bike an unattractive target to thieves simply by making it look too hard to steal. There are a number of ways to do this, including looking for products with a Sold Secure ‘Gold’ rating – this means they have been proven to provide the best protection against a range of attack techniques used by thieves.

“It’s also important to always lock your bike whenever you leave it, securing it through its frame and wheels to a fixed cycle stand, ideally in a busy, well-lit location.

“It’s really upsetting to have your bike stolen as for a lot of people, their bike is their livelihood, so I would strongly encourage you to make sure you’re armed with the best crime prevention tactics to ensure your Christmas present isn’t stolen.”
