Working together to tackle rural crime

Cllr Karen Cooper, SNC’s portfolio holder for Wellbeing said: “Combatting rural crime is one of our priorities here at South Northamptonshire Council and it forms an important part of our Community Safety Partnership Action Plan.South Northamptonshire Council (SNC) along with our partners, held two events this week aimed at tackling rural crime.
The ‘rural crime barn events’, which were held in Horton and Clopton on January 14 and 15, brought farmers, landowners and rural residents together to discuss rural crime issues.

“Events like these are vital to ensure that together with our partner agencies we can meet our rural community and discuss with them what it is we are doing to tackle rural crime, and what we can do to help them protect themselves. It is also a great opportunity for farmers and the rural community to get together, exchange ideas and share what is working well for them in this very challenging area.
“Much hard work has been undertaken to make these events possible, led by SNC’s Community Safety Officer Gary Crook.”
PC Abigail Anstead, of Northamptonshire Police’s Rural Crime Team, said: “The events have been great, and show the positive benefits of engaging with our rural communities and giving them the time they deserve to discuss their concerns.”
Hosted by local farmers, more than 160 people came to the barn events where topics included the work of the Rural Crime Team, why all incidents should be reported to the police and advice on preventing fly-tipping.
Crime prevention advice was also shared, with a new rural crime prevention booklet launched to provide a useful resource for rural residents and business owners.
A new strategy for tackling rural crime was launched at the barn events by Northamptonshire Police and its partners.
Everyone received a copy of the rural crime strategy, which was developed using feedback from Northamptonshire respondents to the 2018 National Rural Crime Network survey and will guide partnership activity across the county over the next three years.
