Notice of European Parliamentary electionNotice of European Parliamentary election

A Notice of Election for the European Parliament has been published today, Monday, 15 April 2019 by South Northamptonshire Council and an election will take place on Thursday, 23 May 2019.

The announcement of the election follows the agreement of an extension to the UK’s exit from the European Union (EU). While the UK remains a member state of the EU, it is required to elect members of European parliament.

Polling stations across the district will open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday, 23 May. The results will be announced on Sunday, 26 May.

South Northamptonshire is part of the East Midlands Region which elects five members under a proportional representation voting system.

Nominations should be submitted to the Regional Returning Officer in line with the details on the Notice of Election.

The statement listing the parties and individual candidates nominated will be published on the council’s website on Friday, 26 April.

Registered electors will receive a polling card in the post with details of their polling station or confirming they have an existing postal or proxy vote.

If you are a UK national and already registered, you do not need to register again.

The deadline for new registration applications is Tuesday, 7 May.

Citizens of EU countries (other than the UK, Republic of Ireland, Malta and Cyprus) will be sent a form they will need to complete and return by Tuesday, 7 May in order to vote in the UK rather than their home country at these elections.

Those who are unable to vote at a polling station on the day can apply for a postal or proxy vote.

A postal vote allows residents to post their vote to the council in advance of the election. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday, 8 May.

A proxy vote nominates a specific person to vote on an elector’s behalf at their polling station. The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is 5pm on Wednesday, 15 May.

Application forms for postal and proxy votes, and registration forms for European Union citizens are available from www.yourvotematters.co.uk.

Residents who do not have internet access should call the council on 01295 227005 for help registering to vote or applying for a postal or proxy vote.
