ABbA to install more gigabit capable connections.
Our little not-for-profit local area company - the Abthorpe Broadband Association Ltd (ABbA) – operated entirely by unpaid volunteers - has been very successfully providing broadband since March 2003. ABbA’s directors aim eventually to provide a fibre optic connection directly to the premises of as many of its member companies and homes as possible to achieve operating speeds in excess of 600Mbps. Parts of Abthorpe and other local villages have already had FTTP installed to give some of the fastest speeds available anywhere.
Last week it was the turn of the south-east section of Abthorpe to potentially benefit. After permission to drill horizontally under Wappenham Road had been granted, contractors carried out the task using a highly sophisticated piece of drilling machinery, in just one morning. Gone are the days of digging a trench across the road! Observing members of the ABbA technical team watched delightedly and undertook an impromptu dance to celebrate.
The costs of installing this additional fibre optic cable network was totally covered by a grant from the government Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) that is running a £67 million voucher subsidy scheme to upgrade small and medium businesses and surrounding homes to gigabit capable connections. That means our members will enjoy some of the fastest broadband speeds available on the planet and still only have to pay £10 a month for unlimited use!
A letter has been circulated to all premises in the village that are capable of benefitting from the new cable asking members to register their interest by leaving a message on the ABbA helpline 08432 898 350.
