At a meeting of South Northamptonshire Council held on 23 October 2019 the plight of EU Citizens who live and work in the area, as the country heads towards a chaotic Brexit was highlighted by Liberal Democrats.
Councillor Chris Lofts told the meeting: “As our country argues and debates Brexit, we must not forget the personal impact the uncertainty causes for EU citizens resident in our local community.”
Government has put in place a scheme for EU nationals to establish a ‘settled status’ allowing them to stay in the UK if Brexit happens but many still seem unaware of their position.
Councillor Lofts went on to say: “We know that many EU, EEA or Swiss citizens may not know what their rights are and how to apply under the settled status scheme.”
After the meeting Councillor Martin Johns said: “I am pleased that South Northamptonshire Council offered to publish more information in SNC Review. That may help EU Nationals in reducing the stress they are under.”
The SNC Website has links to the Government information about the settled status scheme at https://www.southnorthants.gov.uk/info/313/brexit and it was agreed that greater effort should be made to let EU Citizens know about the website.

Councillor Lofts adds: “As Liberal Democrats we firmly believe that the UK will be much better off remaining part of the European Union. What we must do, though, is make sure that if this Tory Government pushes through a disastrous bad deal or no deal Brexit, our EU national friends and family living in our communities here in South Northamptonshire are supported and informed of their rights.”
