Spencer Bruerne (formed in 2014 following the merger of Stoke Bruerne CCC and Spencer CC) started their 2016 season in Division 7 of the Northants Cricket League with a draw at the team who finished second to Spencer Bruerne in the 2015 season.

Winning the toss new skipper Paul Brown opted to follow the same strategy that proved so successful in the 2015 title winning season and opted to bat first.

Openers Steve Faulkner and Alex Holmes put on a good 50 partnership before Faulkner was bowled by Wilson for 16. New recruit Scott Ramsay then joined Holmes and they saw the team to drinks with SBCC on 78-1. Holmes then immediately accelerated the scoring, with 47 coming off the next 5 overs. Ramsay was caught to become the first of 5 wickets for O’Dell with the score on 126. Holmes followed shortly after for a superb 95, laden with boundaries he showed the benefit of having spent a season playing at a higher standard prior to him returning this year. Runs and wickets both flowed steadily. Alec Morgan reached 29, skipper Brown had a nightmare start bagging a golden duck to start his season. Spencer Bruerne finished on 184-7 off 45 overs. O’Dell finishing with 5-49 from 13 overs.

Old began slowly Brown bowling Hope with a delivery that nipped back through the gate for 4. Wilson soon followed to the same bowler for 3 and Old were on 26-2. Windrum playing usual array of eccentric shots and Tighe then set about a rebuild and put on 69 before Tighe was out to the Morgan family double act, caught Alec bowled Guy. Brightman also went to Guy Morgan before drinks. Old needed 80 off 22 overs with 7 wickets in hand and looked favourites to win helped in part, by some ‘early season’ fielding and catching by SBCC. Fortunately the old adage of an interval bringing a wicket proved correct with Ramsay having the dangerous Windrum caught by Pete Stead at fine leg for 65. Spinner Dave Weston took a further 3 wickets as SBCC squeezed Old. With 5 overs to go and 36 runs needed Old lost their 8th wicket and the message came out to see the draw out. Old finished on 166-8. Weston finished 3-30 off 12, Brown 2-25 off 7 and guy Morgan 2-40 off 10. A good start to the season with SBCC getting 17 points.

Such was the success of the merger that for 2016 a second team has been entered into the NCL and they start their season this Saturday at home to Barton Seagrave 2nds. The firsts are without a fixture this week.
