Towcestrians RFC 34 - 13 West Bridgford RFC

Towcestrians picked up a second successive home league win to push back up the Table to 6th spot after this convincing win against Nottingham side West Bridgford.

It was an emotional day for Tows as a minutes silence was observed before kick off to mark the passing of former Club Captain and President of Tows, David "Mac" McDonald, and sadly also Roy Titmuss, who was in part responsible for setting up Tows mini rugby in 1981 and coached the very first cohort of young Towcestrians.

Tows started brightly against Bridgford who had an exceptional season last year in gaining promotion to Midlands 1, early Tows scrum pressure lead to no.8 Craig Holton breaking to put Pepe Nanci over, James Falvey converting. Both sides looked to run the ball, which made for an entertaining game in bright sunshine, Bridgford getting on the board with a penalty from their 10, Davies.

Tows extended the lead when young fly-half, Callum Garwood, steadily growing into the game, broke the line and went over, Falvey again slotting the conversion for a 14 - 3 lead, failure to secure the kick off however allowed the visitors to score and despite several promising attacks Tows failed to convert and the half ended 14 - 8. The second half started in the same vein with Tows failing to look after possession despite some very promising situations and were restricted by West Bridgford to a long range penalty from Falvey, and for the second time in the game Tows failure to secure the kick off from that penalty was punished as Bridgford winger, Jay Heath, broke a tackle to go in from fully 50 metres and put the game in the balance at 17 - 13.

Back row forward Callum Threlfall was introduced in place of younger brother Tom and continued to disrupt the Bridgford attacks, with Tows in possession Callum Garwood spotted a gap and went in for his second try, the extras added by Falvey along with a second penalty to increase the lead back to 27 - 13 and with Tows on top, saw the game, which was well managed by referee, Andy Randell, home with a pushover try, finished by Ben Barwell, and a conversion from Falvey to give him a 100% return from the boot.

Next week Tows return to Friday night action away at Wellingborough 7:30pm Kick Off.

In other games a scratch 2nds/3rds went away to Daventry 2nds and came back from 17 - 0 down to record a 17 - 17 draw, tries from Craeg Doggett, Rohan Griggs and the ever youthful Jim Wallis, Rob Bodily slotting the important conversion, Tows Colts went down to a very strong West Norfolk side in the Cup on Sunday 17 - 39
