Great Game for Norton

Author: Chris Bowmer Published: 9th July 2019 14:17

Overall a great game of cricket, Norton happy to take 154 at tea knowing we were under strength in the bowling department and Yuill, supported by Bristow and Bodily getting the job done in great time.Overall a great game of cricket, Norton happy to take 154 at tea knowing we were under strength in the bowling department and Yuill, supported by Bristow and Bodily getting the job done in great time.

This week saw Norton take on Kings Sutton, arriving at the ground to see the track being rolled and a freshly cut outfield, albeit lots of grass laying on the surface. Kings Sutton on the back of three straight losses and Norton full of confidence, skipper Holton won the toss and elected to bowl first as this week Norton were short on bowling options so keen to chase a target.

Sandle, who scored freely in the previous meeting at home opened the batting with Green, Jenkin soon in his stride had Sandle swishing outside of off stump a couple of times before having him caught behind (Turner) off the last ball off of the first over, Sutton 0/1 after 1. Green was bowled by Yuill soon after, struggling to get the ball away after a couple of tight overs from Yuill. Boys entered the crease to soon be sent back, beautifully bowled by Jenkin, Sutton 8/3 off 6. Chequer entered the crease to join Omar who had been batting patiently and dispatching the bad ball and trying to re build the innings. Unfortunately for Chequer, after trying to get to Yuill by walking away as he came in to bowl and telling the keeper "he can wait for me" smothered one to Holton, eventually caught off arm to chest to hand for 0, Sutton 24/4 off 10. Humphrey joined Omar at the crease, departing for 6 off the bowling of Yuill, soon followed by Omar being caught in the deep by Yuill off Wallis for 16, Sutton 41/6 off 19.

With Nortons recognised senior bowlers now used up with the exception of Jenkin, Skipper Holton turned to Bristow jnr, who bowled well for 5 overs for 12 runs, unlucky not to get a wicket. Whitehouse and Wiggins were beginning to get hold of the Norton second string, waiting patiently to dispatch the bad ball to the boundary. Holton replaced Bristow with no success, Baker replacing Jenkin at the other end with similar effect. Skipper had seen enough of his own buffet bowling and had so removed himself from the attack to be replacd by evergreen veteran Bodily, nursing a hip injury but soon removed Whitehouse, caught and bowled for 33 and bowled Wiggins for 30 in his first over. Sutton 106/8 off 32. Sellwood joined the party and took a fancy to Baker, hitting the ball hard to all parts of the ground, Bodily clearing up the two remaining Sutton wickets, both bowled, for Sutton to finish 154 all out, a great recovery from 24/5.

Norton took a lovely tea, thank you ladies, and after a long debate it was decided to open with Bristow and Robinson. Robinson, batting in his usual patient manner hit a glorious 4 but soon to be out, Norton 15/1 off 3. Bristow was joined by Yuill, who seemed in no mood to be hanging around. He raced to his 50 off 16 scoring shots, dispatching the ball effortlessly to all area of the ground. Bristow was offering good support playing in similar manner when he eventually got a chance to face a ball!! Norton brought the 100 up in the 14th over, Bristow eventually falling for 24 in 16th, Norton 124/2 so this left Yuill and Bodily to see Norton home in 20.1 overs, Yuill batting brilliantly, but not chanceless, to reach his 100 in the 18th over finishing 106 not out and Bodily 10 not out, Norton 156/2.

Overall a great game of cricket, Norton happy to take 154 at tea knowing we were under strength in the bowling department and Yuill, supported by Bristow and Bodily getting the job done in great time.

Attention now moves to Thurs evening, cup game away at Radway and back to league action on Sat away to Hanslope.
