Battle’s Over

Marna Perrigo the Chairman of our Parish Council had laid a wreath on behalf of everyone in the parish and villagers dotted around the assembled crowd read out the names of those from this village who had been killed in action during both world wars.
The haunting strains of the Last Post drifted eerily across our village green as over 60 villagers stood silently by the war memorial remembering those killed or injured in conflict. The two minutes of silent reflection ended with the sounding of Reveille and soon the assembled throng snaked into our church for a celebration to mark the end of the First World War.

Later in the gloaming outside the church as night set in Abthorpe people took part in the whole nation’s tribute to the ending of The Great War. The Last Post and Reveille were played again, a beacon of light was lit whilst the church and other bells rang out for peace. Inside our church a Toast for Peace in the whole world was proposed. Let us pray that some time our wish will become a reality.
