(Courtesy David Robbins.)Villagers were stunned when they crowded into The Old School to see for themselves how the main hall has been completely refurbished. The place is wonderful! Glisteningly bright and a superb venue for that special event. The sound absorbent layer sprayed onto the ceiling has ensured that the acoustics are greatly improved. The new lighting system can be altered at the click of a switch and the turn of a dimmer to ensure that events needing maximum illumination  or soft cosy glows can both be catered for. The ugly electrical wiring seems to have disappeared and professionally made fabric blinds and cushions introduced. The old fireplace has been revamped and is now a pleasant part of the decor.

In his welcoming speech, Richard Gladdle the Chairman of the Old School Committee that has been supervising the refurbishment, hoped that people would like what has been achieved and agree that it is now a warm and welcoming space that retains the architectural features of our Grade Two listed building. He thanked everyone for their generous support of the fundraising and the help they had given to the project. Lynn Neasham and Jill Tolson were especially thanked for the innumerable hours they had put into the design brief, tendering the contracts, applying for grants, administering the finance and managing the project.

Simon Hemmings of Simat Ltd was the project’s builder and project manager. He was supported by Kevin Weakley the joiner, Mat Mumford an electrician and Gary Lake a decorator. They were all conscientious and true professionals who were happy to share their expertise and knowledge. They were a pleasure to work with and the Committee is happy to recommend them. The volunteers  of Tove Valley Broadband were thanked for installing the superb high speed free WiFi.

Richard concluded by thanking Jan Miles the Secretary and all the Committee who ensured that the building was able to re- open. The work that has been done has preserved the hall for current and future residents of Abthorpe. We hope you will make use of it and encourage others to do so also.
