Another week where rain had its impact, with Norton’s covers not being quite so successful second time round with a couple of damp patches on the otherwise excellent dry wicket. Norton elected to bowl on a wicket that might be tricky.
For a change the Norton openers managed a couple of early breakthroughs with Nicholls caught behind having failed to score under early pressure, Ghanti fell immediately to a typical Bowmer inswinger and after a couple of lusty blows Hallam went the same way. At the other end Alcock was confused by Prasanth bowling round the wicket, playing on for 9.
With 4 wickets down Willoughby needed a consolidation and this came from Foxon and Stevenson. They saw off the openers and Foxon in particular playing one big shot an over took the attack back to Norton.
Yuill eventually snared Stevenson Lbw for 21 and Foxon caught off the edge at fine leg for 39. Two more wickets followed quickly to put Willoughby deep in trouble at 97-9. Another recovery saw Fleming and Barnwell hit the bad ball and sometimes the good one in an excellent partnership, they used up the remaining overs and Willoughby’s total to a defendable 165-9. Fleming not out for 40 and Barnwell 22.
Momentum was with Willoughby after their final wicket partnership and pressure was on the Norton openers. Horley showed what Norton had been missing with an elegant and rapid 38 in a partnership of 49 for the first wicket within 10 overs, unlucky not to clear the fielder at long off.
Yuill came in and topped off a poor season with an edge behind to go for 15 and the immediate loss of Bristow saw Norton wobbling a little at 86-3 at drinks.
Taylor came in to add impetus with Honour, ably providing the anchor role, finally going for a solid 35 caught off a mistimed drive to Ghanti’s first ball. Already though the 5 overs after drinks had brought 30 and Norton were within striking distance of the target.
Taylor and Jones proved how close, they took a liking to the bowling with Taylor adding four 6’s to take him to a fantastic 55 not out, Jones added two 6’s of his own in his rapid 22 not out and Norton rushed to the required total in only 5 more overs to 169-4 with 10 overs to spare.
A great finish to take Norton to a fantastic win, and enough to take them off the bottom of the league.
