Helmdon vs GNCC

After a very wet week Norton returned to Helmdon for the first time for probably 10 years to a wet track and the coin toss critical. Fortunately for us Skipper Bristow won the toss and elected to bowl.

The wet wicket was very slow and so was the scoring rate, Brown on debut snared a couple of early wickets with both Timmis and Grove falling for 0. Bridger followed soon after caught in short as the ball came off slowly.

Marland and Arrand steadied the Helmdon cause for a while, Marland really the only Helmdon player to master the conditions and the bowling. Eventually Arrand lost patience with obdurate defence and hoicked Jenkin's last ball of his 8 overs to be caught at mid on.

Helmdon skipper Gabittas tried to up the rate but was well caught in the deep by Kightley for 6 but when Marland went off a thin edge to the junior Bristow for 48 the tail failed to master the (improving) conditions and was wrapped up by Brown (3-9) and Bowmer (3-17) with Helmdon finishing on 102.

A small shower as tea finished failed to stop the improvement in the wicket, which was nevertheless still pretty hazardous with Bridger in particular making it spit and bounce, opener Bodily taking one on the head.

At the other end Hirst was lucky to take the wicket of Baker slapping it hard only to be well caught at mid off and Allen missed one that bowled him, this only brought in Yuill to join Bodily in the third over, Norton 8-2.

In Hirst's next over Yuill decided that hanging around was not on the agenda plundering 26 and although Bridger managed to contain a bit at the other end (5 overs for 15 runs) Hirst went for 40 off his 4 overs, Jonty Bridger for 33 off his 2 and Yuill went to his 50 around 20 balls.

Bodily and Yuill rushed to the finish going to an apparent 103 in only 12.5 overs at which point everyone thought it was over, until the scorers revealed a mistake and we went back for another ball, which gave Grabbitas the option of avoiding going for another 6 by bowling a wide – actually 103-2 and a victory for Norton.

A good win by one of the best teams Norton has put out for years but definitely we had the best of the conditions, expecting a closer game next time.
