29th June was Super Saturday for Silverstone Cricket Club29th June was Super Saturday for Silverstone Cricket Club

The matches for both teams saw 1st v 2nd in the premier and division 4 of the South Northants Cricket League.  As Saturday approached the number of available players was decreasing as rapidly as the temperature was rising.

First team v MK Air (Home)
The current league leaders arrived at Silverstone and were invited to bat first.  Silverstone took an early wicket with great work from Andrew Benyon resulted in a run out.  Wickets continued to fall and scoring was difficult notwithstanding the fast outfield.  At the end of their innings, MK Air were 130-9.  Catches were taken by Joe Lindsay and Dave Williams.  Ryan Knight 3-29, Sean Gardiner 2-18, Sean Stokes 2-19 and Ollie Starbuck 1-17 were the wicket takers well supported Williams 0-11 and Richard West 0-16.

When Silverstone opened their innings they also found it difficult to score runs.  A patient 24 by Starbuck set the base for the reply but wickets were falling.  Ben Cooper scored a rapid 29 that shifted the balance.  Sach Patil (24 not out) controlled the later batsmen with support from Gardiner (12) before Patil and first team debutant, Jack Harris, saw Silverstone to victory and top of the league.

Second team v Wardington (away)
The team travelled with a subtle blend of youth and experience, including three debutants.

Bruce Benyon opened the innings and  at the end of twenty overs was still there (but had turned bright orange). Debutant Will Thomas scored his maiden fifty for the club as the innings closed at a very creditable 130 all out.

Wardington’s innings faltered with Tony Wallinger taking three of his four wickets in his first three overs.  Benyon took four wickets before Gwyn Roberts managed to bowl a 15 ball over.  Wardington’s were all out for 107.  The other wickets were taken by Roberts and Harry Wallinger.  The result sees Silverstone replace Wardington at the top of the division.
