Silverstone Circuit has donated £4,500 through monies raised from parking fines at the FORMULA 1 BRITISH GRAND PRIX to four local charities. Brickle Pocket Park, Chackmore Junior School, Whittlebury Primary School and the Silverstone Women’s Institute were all successful in their application to receive a share of funds from a parking fine operation at the region’s biggest sporting event of the year.

Parking regulations are implemented at the event to ensure that visitors to the British Grand Prix adhere to the parking rules which, in turn, enable the circuit to manage traffic flow on the highway, and in and out of the car parks.Following the 2008 FORMULA 1 SANTANDER BRITISH GRAND PRIX Silverstone announced the community initiative, inviting individuals to nominate local charities for consideration.
Details of each charity, including the sum of money required and how the money would be put to use, were considered by a charity committee, whose responsibility it was to review all requests and decide which initiatives would benefit from funds raised by the fines.
After much deliberation, and in line with the circuit’s strategy to support local educational and environmental issues, the four successful charities were:
Whittlebury Primary School
£3,000 donation to help fund the purchase of laptop computers, aiding the education of children who attend Whittlebury Primary School.
Chackmore Junior School
£1,000 donation to help fund the purchase of books and seating for a new library at Chackmore Junior School. The infant and junior school accommodates children from the age of 4/5 to sitting their 11+ exams.
Brickle Pocket Park
£350 donation to fund the purchase of a brushwood cutter, which will aid a Silverstone-based volunteer group in its efforts to maintain an area of local land that has been transformed from a rubbish tip into a ‘Haven of Tranquility’. The site is now managed as a wild life sanctuary.
Silverstone Women’s Institute
£150 donation to help fund a bursary for one member of the Institute to attend a residential course at Denman College. Denman College, which is run by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes, provides a safe and encouraging environment for women to further their education and learn new skills, including history, painting and the management of finances.
Speaking at the presentation of a £3,000 cheque to Whittlebury Primary School, Richard Phillips, Managing Director of Silverstone Circuits Limited, said: “Silverstone Circuit enjoys a close working relationship with the local community and we rely heavily on their support during events such as the British Grand Prix. It is great, therefore, when we get opportunities like this to support local environment and education initiatives.“
Controlled and orderly parking is a key element of the traffic management system that we implement for the British Grand Prix. As a result, we are forced to put a parking fining operation into practice to dissuade customers from parking where they shouldn’t. In addition to acting as a deterrent, the scheme also provides us with the opportunity to make donations to local charities, supporting worthy causes”.
Stuart Hall, Chairman of the Friends of Whittlebury School Association, commented: “The money means that the small village school can now have all the up-to-date IT equipment needed to keep abreast of our ever changing world. It means so much to the teachers and parents.”
