Volunteers sought for school place appeal panels

Appeals are usually heard during term-time and can last for half a day, a whole day, and for some popular schools, several days. Panel members are contacted in advance to check their availability.
Volunteers looking for a new opportunity are invited to apply to become an Independent Appeal Panel member.
Independent Appeal Panels make decisions on school place appeals. Each panel is made up of three people with no connection to the specific school or the local authority, and must have at least one panel member with education experience, one member without education experience and a panel chair.
Appeals are usually heard during term-time and can last for half a day, a whole day, and for some popular schools, several days. Panel members are contacted in advance to check their availability.
The decision of an Independent Appeal Panel is binding on the local authority and the school. Independent Appeal Panels operate under the authority of the Ministry of Justice and in accordance with tribunal rules.
