Wellingborough Indians 2nd XI v Stoke Bruerne CC Saturday 25 August 2012
Stoke Bruerne took a huge step towards promotion with a 59 run victory over Wellingborough Indians at the ‘mad mile’ on Saturday.
Losing the toss and batting first, Stoke lost opener Charlie Edwards with just 18 on the board. Simon Orme followed shortly after and then Paul Gardner and Alex Holmes went in quick succession leaving Stoke wobbling on 54-4. Bob Anderson and Ashley Morris then put together a vital 72 run partnership full of glorious stroke play to lift Stoke to 124-4 at the 30 over stage. Hopes of a score around 250 were dashed however as both Anderson for 42 and Morris for 23 fell in quick succession to the Wellingborough spinners followed by Nick Adams for a duck turning a good position into 131-7. Luke Adams (27) then added a vital 30 with Gary Bliss to move the score on. Again 2 quick wickets fell leaving Alex Chaffer and Dave Weston to try and bat the full overs out. Chaffer was clean bowled and Stoke finished on 172 all out in 43 overs. Sunil Semplay the best of the bowlers with 4-27.
Alex Chaffer struck early in the Indians reply having opener Alpesh Patel caught by Anderson. A sharp piece of fielding saw Morris run out Ketan Patel to put the Indians on 34-2. There then followed a steady partnership of 32 between Raul Patel and Hitesh Patel before Luke Adams had Hitesh caught for 10. Waqas Elhi then edged Bliss behind and the Indians were 68-4. However Raul and Sunil Semplay then took the Indians forward putting on 22. At this point Stoke looked in trouble, but as so many times this season they dug deep and turned the game on its head. Bliss caught and bowled Raul Patel for 40 and at 90-5 the game was still in the balance. However Morris returned for his second spell and ripped through the tail. Weston was bowling very tightly at the other end as Morris took 4 quick wickets, Semplay went LBW, Upendra Patel was caught by Anderson, Ravi Shastri and Biren Patel were clean bowled.
As the 9th wicket fell the heavens opened and it looked as though play might have finished, but after 40 minutes delay the umpires decided it was fit and there were 8 overs left. Morris needed just 3 overs to wrap things up Dipesh Surti caught at point by the leaping Chaffer to wrap up a fantastic turnaround. Morris finished with 11.5-2-21-5 supported by Bliss 2-26 and Weston who was frugal with 9-4-10-0 to apply the pressure.
With the teams around them all drawing Stoke are now 28 points clear of second placed Weldon and 44 clear of third placed Brixworth with 3 games to go. Stoke are at home to Kettering 2nd XI on Saturday.
