A5 Rangers N&DCA Time Trial

Northants & District Cycling Association Time Trial organised by the A5 RangersNorthants & District Cycling Association Time Trial organised by the A5 Rangers

The A5 Rangers organised their annual N&DCA Time Trial last weekend.

The course record is held by the current triple (10 mile , 25 mile and 50 mile) National Champion, Matt Bottrill. The weather was forecast as ideal for Time Trialling so the fast boys were looking to beat that time. Regrettably due to the Course Marshalls discovering road works early on Saturday morning the course route had to hastily be changed. That also resulted in it being reduced from 19 to 16 miles but the riders said it was a good course under the circumstances.

There was a broad spectrum of ages across the 60 or so entrants ranging from 15 to 75, with 9 being over 70. There was a good contingent of ladies and also a good number of teenagers proving Time Trialling locally is in a rude state of health.

Jon Simpkins from “Drag2Zero.com” took the top step of the podium with a time of 35 minutes and 07 seconds, that is over 27mph! Martin Jones from “Team Sales Engine” came second in 36.25 and Geoff Platt, third, with a time of 37.15. I’m sure Geoff won’t mind me pointing out that his age begins with a “6” and his Age Group target time was 53.05, so a superb performance by him.

The A5 Rangers had a good showing in the top 20 with Enrico just missing out on a podium in 4th with Mark Avil, Graham Martin and Pete Trotman all up there.

Big congratulations must go to Jerry Norman (Fenland Clarion CC) who was, literally, just outside the top 20 with a time of just over 40 minutes, an average speed of 23.5 mph! Jerry, at just 15, will only get faster. You guys had better watch out, he’s coming to get you.

Two of the ladies in particular did extremely well. Linda Hubbard with a time of 43.50 and Jackie Field at 40.52 (24.5 mph). It would be impertinent of me to let you know Jackies’ age but her Category target time was 55.27.

One last name to highlight is Dave Birch who at the age of 73 achieved an average speed of 21mph. Stuff of legend, we are not worthy.

The A5R Clubroom in Towcester was the base for the event with most of the riders heading back there for well earned tea and cakes.

The club holds local Time Trials every Wednesday evening and arranges a “Come and try a TT” on Tuesday evenings
