Scotland were crowned Six Nations champions in a Northumberland Schools tournament this week !
Nearly a hundred 12 and 13 year-old girls took part in the Northumberland Schools Six Nations tournament this week at Alnwick RFC, and it was Scotland who were crowned champions!
Leading up to the event seven schools had coaching sessions delivered by England Women's international Tamara Taylor, who is also a Community Rugby Coach in the North East, where they were taught the basics of the 10-a-side game.
Each team wore t-shirts in the colour of the nation they were representing which were kindly sponsored by Alnwick District Council and the RFUW. Players and supporters alike painted their faces, waved their flags and cheered for their respective nation with pride.
Ireland narrowly missed out in the pool stages coming in just behind Scotland by only one try, leaving Wales at the bottom of Pool 1. Pool 2 was also closely fought with Italy winning, France second and England third.
The fifth and sixth place play-off game between Wales and England was a reverse of the women's RBS 6 Nations international in February with the Welsh scoring four tries to nil this time. Ireland easily overcame France 5-0 to take third place, leaving Italy and Scotland to fight it out for the title.
With ten minutes each way, both sides battled hard with Italy using clever kicking to gain useful territory early on. Player of the match Lindsey Taylor from Lindisfarne Middle School made some good tackles and scored the final try, crowning Scotland Six Nations Champions.
Each nation nominated a 'player of the country' with the winners receiving signed balls from the international women's team of their nation and a goody bag from the Scottish RFU.
Prizes were presented by England internationals Katy Mclean and Tamara Taylor who will both be playing for England against Scotland in Edinburgh on Saturday.
